San José neighborhoods are continuing to strengthen local emergency preparedness through CERT training and emerging “Village Hub” community response programs.
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) teaches residents practical disaster-response skills including fire safety, light search and rescue, first aid, and neighborhood coordination during emergencies. The free training is supported by the City of San José Office of Emergency Management and helps residents prepare for earthquakes, fires, power outages, and other disasters.
In addition to CERT, some neighborhood groups are now promoting “Village Hubs” – local mutual-aid gathering points intended to help neighbors share information, resources, and support during major disruptions or communication outages. Recent neighborhood preparedness events in San José have featured demonstrations and discussions about how Village Hubs can help communities become more resilient and self-sufficient during emergencies.
